Free knife designs

design of knife

When I got started in knifemaking, I didn’t have one clear thought about design. I grabbed the only suitable knifemaking material I could find and went to work grinding on it. There was no thought as to knife proportions or design principles.

What impact does knife handle design have on my product?

I outfitted the “project knife” for this book with my standard 4 1/4-inch handle. A knife handle of this size can be used on blades that are up to a half-inch longer than the project blade. The knife on the right in the photo is the full-sized project knife, and on the left is a computer-enhanced version with a slightly shorter handle. Use your judgment on handle length but don’t opt for a grip shorter than 4 inches.

Unveiling the Beauty of Silvered Glass: A Historic Technique with a Modern Twist

I constantly update this page and you may see new patterns or pictures nearly every visit. Another common knife type, clip point blades frequently appear on pocket and bowie knives. The spine dips halfway down the blade, usually in a concave shape, although it may be straight too.

The best example of this is a blade that has been either selectively hardened or selectively tempered. Such a blade can have an extremely hard edge, yet withstand a 90-degree flex test. This is possible because the edge is hard, the center section of the blade is spring tempered and the back is relatively soft. Once I built my first belt grinder, I only used the grinding wheel for rough-grinding blade profiles in order to save on sanding belts. It was actually kind of foolish if I would have considered my time to be worth money. I built my 8-inch, flat-disc machine with parts designed for lapidary work.

These designs are suitable for anyone with a drill press and some basic hand tools. With this blade, both the spine and the cutting edge curve inward. Its downward point makes it a great choice for scraping surfaces, whittling, opening boxes, and other practical applications. As its name suggests, spear point blades are symmetrical and have a center point like a spear. Some are sharpened at both ends, while others, like penknives, are only sharp on the bottom edge. Most knives designed for throwing have a spear point blade.

Once you are satisfied with the shape, hand sand till ya' can't no more, working down to a very fine grit. Whatever your need, there is a knife blade shape that can serve it best. Excessive stress can shear one or both of these hooks rendering the knife effectively useless. It’s best to start by creating a comfortable handle with finger grooves. A deeper groove should be made for the index finger since most of the pressure during work falls on it.

Number one was the first one off the outside (the driest) of the ebony section. Number four was closest to the center of the ebony and it was the one that shrunk enough to crack. I had cut my slabs off of the end that was fresh cut by the wood dealer. The other end was sealed with wax so there was no way for the wood to be free of excess moisture.

The wood in the center of a 2-by-4-inch chunk of hardwood will have quite a bit of moisture in it compared to the outside layer. A drawing can be scanned into a computer and then printed out to whatever size is wanted. Once the design on paper is finalized and printed out, I use rubber cement to glue the printout to a piece of thin hardboard or plywood.

The blade is known as a “dropped point.” I call it a utility shape. It’s been said that the perfect design is achieved when everything that isn’t necessary has been stripped away. Therefore our project knife won’t showcase fancy file work, gold plating, inlays, attached guards, bolsters or a pommel cap. It will employ only that which is necessary to get the work done. There is usually more information on the name on the individual featured knife pages included as the green links below. On those pages, you'll see much more information and many more photos of the individual knives.

Festoons, symbolic of abundance and festivity, have graced art and design for centuries. Their enduring appeal continues to inspire contemporary creations. Ceramic glazing, spanning millennia, combines art and functionality. From ancient techniques to modern sustainability, its rich history reflects human creativity. Prince Rupert’s metal, a brass alloy with 60-85% copper and 15-40% zinc, resembles gold but is more affordable. This is a tribute to Lloyd Harding, Western Australian Master knife maker, 1921 to 2003.

Anchor Blocks, a German building system, influenced Frank Lloyd Wright’s design philosophy. Precisely engineered with durable materials, they were popular toys and collector’s items. The Jacquard mechanism, a transformative 18th-century invention, revolutionized textile design by enabling complex patterns.

Stock removal wouldn’t have been feasible because it would have wasted enough material to make another knife or two. Two blades can often be forged from the same-sized piece of steel that would make only one full-tang stock-removal blade. The invention of manmade grinding wheels opened up the possibility for steel to be removed quickly, and stock removal became feasible for making knives. The spear point knife blade shape features a symmetrical curve on both sides of a center spine.

Basically, at this point you are trying to grind the scales down till you can no longer see any epoxy. All harpoon blades have the upward ramp onthe back, but aside from that, there are many variations in appearance. Someare pointed like a spear or feature straight or curved edges.

Before we get to that dual integral handle, let’s take a look at the hardest working part of the Sylph’s design, which is, of course, its blade. In wa handle knives the weight balance of the knife is often towards the blade which favors the push cutting motion common in Asian cuisine.
